SUMMARY:FOLK Summer Wildlife Walk
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of our Geology and Bat themed walks\, FOL
K is pleased to announce the latest in the series - a guided Wildlife Wal
k on the Hill.\n\nLeckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common are home to
a rich variety of wildlife\, a number of which are locally and nationally
important species. Birds\, butterflies and moths\, wildflowers (including
a number of orchids)\, mammals and reptiles are all to be found here – p
lus a vast range of other families too numerous to mention. The site has a
number of very different habitats\, each with its own specific collection
of species\; these will also change as the Wildlife Year scrolls through
its various seasons.\n\nSummer is an exciting time on the Hill with many m
igrant birds joining the host of resident birds to breed at various sites
across the Hill. Wildflowers are in full bloom\, including orchids which h
ave a limited flowering season\, and there are a number of butterflies on
the wing - including one of the site’s nationally endangered species\,
the Duke of Burgundy.\n\nDuring this walk our Treasurer Mark Dowie - a w
ildlife enthusiast and regular visitor to the Hill - will hope to point ou
t some of the species on show. Nature being Nature\, no two visits to the
Hill will ever be the same\, and the number of species seen will vary due
to the time of day\, seasonal changes and\, of course\, the weather. Howev
er\, many species are reliable at this time of year and we hope to find pl
enty to see.\n\nSo\, if you are passionate about wildlife\, whether birds\
, orchids\, butterflies (or all of the above!) please join us on our Summ
er Wildlife Walk. It doesn’t matter if you are a relative beginner\, or
if you are already hooked and would like to know more about what is on you
r doorstep but just don’t know where to look.\n\nThe session will last 2
-3 hours\, and we will focus on one particularly species-rich area of the
site: The Gallops and the eastern slopes.  The walk will be easy going wi
th some limited walking on the lower slopes.  Group size will be limited
to give everyone an opportunity to participate and ask any questions they
may have.  And don’t forget your binoculars\, cameras &amp\; mobile pho
nes (on silent of course!) and any field guide books you may want to bring
.\n\nIf you would like to attend this session\, please contact Peter Whall
ey by email norwoodpw1@gmail.com\n\nBookings will be taken on a first-com
e-first-served basis and more detailed information will be made available
when the session has been confirmed.\n\nWe will be requesting a voluntary
donation to support FOLK’s conservation work.\n\nThank you.\nFOLK Execut
 ive Committee
